Taygetos stands over the Gulf of Messinia and dominates the view inland from most of the Mani.
What grows and lives on it
The mountain carries one of the richest ranges of plant and animal life anywhere, and the change as you climb, from olive and scrub up into the high ground, happens over a surprisingly short distance.
Even if you never leave the car, the road over it is one of the better drives in the Peloponnese.
